Facts about Isis

Region: Egypt & Nubia, later Greece and Rome, Isis temples were discovered even as far as England

Time: beginning of 2nd millenium BC till 6th century CE

Meaning of the name: ‘Woman of the Throne’

Goddess of: magic, fertility and motherhood, death, healing and rebirth. Isis was also worshipped as the goddess of good fortune, the sea, and travel.

Representations: a sun disk between the horns of a cow. Occasionally she was represented as a scorpion, a bird, a sow, or a cow. Her symbol was Tyet (other name: Tit), also known as ‘Isis knot’ (check the previous graphic). There’s a theory that tyet may have originally been a bandage used to absorb menstrual blood.

Connection to other goddesses: She was the daughter of goddess Nut (goddess of the night sky).

In Greece Isis was originally linked with Demeter, goddess of agriculture. In and around Lebanon she was associated with the Middle Eastern goddess Astarte and Ishtar. In Roman cities she was linked with Fortuna, goddess of luck, and Venus (greek Aphrodite), goddess of love.

Fun fact: Osiris (who was her husband… and brother) was murdered by their other brother Seth and chopped into 14 pieces and scattered across the country. Isis, retrieved all of the pieces except one: his penis, which had been eaten by fish in the Nile. In the absence of the original, Isis made a phallus herself, on the resurrected body of Osiris. First dildo y’all! And a magical one, as it gave them a son - Horus.

The Divine Protectress

She was believed to help the dead enter the afterlife as she had helped Osiris, and her maternal aid was invoked in healing spells to benefit ordinary people.

Her magical power was greater than that of all other Egyptian gods, and she was said to protect the kingdom from its enemies, govern the skies and the natural world, and wield power over fate itself. Some of her devotees said she encompassed all feminine divine powers in the world. By virtue of her magical knowledge, she was said to be "more clever than a million gods".

She was a compassionate deity, willing to relieve human suffering.

Fun Fact: In Greek times of Isis worship her followers assigned to her an invention of marriage.

Mother of the Kings

Isis was considered the divine mother of the pharaoh, who was likened to Horus. Temple reliefs from the time of New Kingdom show the king nursing at Isis's breast; her milk not only healed her child, but symbolized his divine right to rule. She was shown with the same regalia as human queens, and called with the same royal titles.

She protected Osiris and Horus from the god Set, and so she was treated as protectress of royal families too. Kings often called upon her protective magical power against human enemies.

As the deity that protected Egypt and endorsed its king, she had power over all nations, and as the provider of rain, she enlivened the natural world.
